Au Revoir Ashley Osment
If you scroll down on the right of this blog, you will find a short piece written by one of my heroines, Ashley Osment. She was diagnosed with cancer a couple years ago and struggled to survive, determining that to be here on this earth meant that we were to be happy. She died last night as the wind whipped through the oak trees. She helped many, harmed none. I miss her. I know I am not alone. May her spirit, vision, energy, passion and empathetic example live on in all of us.

The Hoffmans visit from Greifswald!
Wolfgang, Gisela, Joshua (Yoshi), Yannick and Nico came to visit us for 3 nights from Greifswald, Germany (previously East Germany) on the Baltic Sea where we spent a magical summer a few years ago and where Harper Ursula learned to walk. That is Yoshi, their oldest, 11, above, in Vieux Lyon. And here he is again, sitting outside the bakery where we bought sandwiches for our picnic. You can see the orange homemade lizard catching net we made.
The old broken yellow chair on our back deck with a candle lantern.
Yannick, 9, the middle boy, soccer player, with Guthrie in our backyard after soft fish tacos with fresh lime juice, radishes, guacamole, margaritas, chips and black beans.
Yannick on our deck table:
Nico on Wolfgang's shoulders in Old Lyon....(looking an awful lot like out other loved Nico in NC).
Lyon hosted a public art installation performance project over the weekend and here are a few results:
A tree on the way down the steep hill from Fouvriere Cathedral:
This is above my desk here. The prints on the left and right are the 1st test etchings from my project at URDLA.
A statue in Old Lyon:
Typical medieval staircase in Old Lyon -
Restaurant window in Vieux Lyon. (I photographed this same window ten years ago.)
Looking down from one of the pedestrian bridges over the Soane River. The kids were thrilled to see divers and rafts -
My foot in the Roman Amphitheatre - Campers and Manchester stockings....
My princess pie Harper and mommy me at the Roman amphitheatre overlooking Lyon, where we went for our picnic of tuna and ham sandwiches, apples, oranginas, saucissons....while the noys tried to catch lizards -
The lizard that Guthrie caught in our neighborhood park playground. He proudly brought it to school today to the kids delight. And he nicely let it go tonight, as he goes on a 2 night camping trip tomorrow with his school and the lizard refused to eat the insects and flies we put in the jar for him.....
Yannick, Harper and Nico:
The Hoffmans and Slavick Richardsons in Croix Rousse -
In our entranceway -
Guthrie and Harper in a medieval stairway....
Harper on daddy's lap at the picnic -
Harper and Yannick on the metro to Croix Rousse. Yannick called Harper "my Harper" and Harper adored him....
Grumpy Harper after dinner, ready for bed....
Harper snuggling on darling daddy's lap....with blue bear and her suckling fingers....
Guthrie in front of a gorgeous tiled wall in the Parc Tete D'or. (Supposedly somewhere in this aprk there is a buried golden head.) The wall is part of the building where you rent paddle or row boats, which we did.
Guthrie's incoming teeth are hurting him. Here he is being consoled by papa.....
Guthrie and Nico -
Guthrie and a trompe l'oeil Paul Bocuse.....
A grotto on the way down from Fouvriere cathedral filled with trolls....
A giraffe in Parc Tete D'Or...the zoo architect MUST have planned the perfect matching background!
A fortune teller in Old Lyon. For some reason this makes me think of Joel Brouwer's poetree....
Darling David's photos of me:
Dead flowers in Old Lyon -
Sweet and tired David having a margarita with me after work while the kids build a fort inside...
Under our spiral staircase - Buddha and paper lanterns....
The paddle boat with Gisela pedalling in funky purple stockings, Yannick, Guthrie and Harper yelping with glee....
A reflection in our apartment window in the backyard -
Gisela sharpening the boy's pocketknife....
Typical Old Lyon courtyard architecture....
37.5
Once again, I did not bring my camera to my favoruite Lyon restaurant, Canut et des Gones, in Croix Rousse, but we took Wolfgang and Gisela there and had: Communards (red wine with creme de cassis); white asparagus flan with herb jelly, green asparagus and lemon chutney; beef carpacio with shaved parmesan and olive oil; fresh bread; yummy wine; Ile Flottante (soft meringue in a bowl fo creme anglais drizzled with caramel)......
