Still chilly in April....

We had houseguests for a week, val and Laura, our dear NC friends. They kept us busy with a trip to Provence; wine tasting; great meals; another wonderful trip to Facteur Cheval's Palais Ideal in Hauterives; amazing Muscat and Clairette; lots of driving, eating, drinking, walking and conversation. I am now fully immersed in France and loving it, not wanting to leave at the end of June. We go to Zurich on Thursday for 2 nights for my friend Lisa Ross' opening.

We took val and Laura to one of our favourite places in Provence - the Abbye de Senanque, a medieval abbye with lavender fields and bee hives, monks chanting and old glass:

There was a pretty enigmatic photography and installation by Delphine Baily in the Catsle Suze la Rousse, including this hair piece set on a glass head and a red glove...

Here we are in Gigondas, the town of our favourite wine, where we tasted plenty and the kids rode a carousel, had ballon animals made by a clown and we hiked up the hill to see contemporary public sculpture:

Lots of driving ...

On the way home from Hauterives:

Here I am in front of my favourite spot at the Ideal Palais, a little archway under his home that says, "1893, travaille, ordre, economie (work, order, economy)". val and Laura kept calling me comrade!

Near Hauterives...

As John Berger's writes in his Keeping a Rendezvous, brought to me by Laura, in an essay on the Ideal Palais, everytime you go, you see something else and are enveloped.....

One of Laura's amazing new depot vente skirts...

Our amazing picnic on the way to Provence, in a dandelion filled field near a nuclear power plant and lavendar fields. We feasted on fresh breads; apple cassis juice; Nyons olives; avocadoes; sun dried tomatoes; Saint Marcellin, Saint Felicien, Comte and goat cheeses; salami; saucisson; foie gras; clementines and almonds.....

Getting ready to hike up into Seguret...

These images are not in chronological order, sorry! Here was our first wine tasting in Suzienne, where we bought a case and some creme de cassis....

Kids waiting for us as we taste wines in Suzienne. Guthrie played on his DSI and Harper watched, coming in to check on us occassionally....

The delectable appetizer at our lunch in Vacqueras, salmon quennelles, endive and cervelle de canut (brains of silkweavers = garlic, chives and creme fraiche)
Followed by the main course of a small chicken with mushroom sauce, taglitelle and yummy beans (lima? broad?)

Back at home in Lyon, val with his travel journal and light shining through their new market glasses - polka dots, 6 for 2 euros!
